How To Play Cribbage

Basic Version

Cribbage is a two-player card game (also playable with 3–4 players) that combines strategy, counting, and a little luck. Here's how a round works:

1

The Deal

Each player is dealt six cards. Each player then chooses two cards to place face-down into the "crib" — a bonus hand that belongs to the dealer at the end of the round.

2

The Cut

The non-dealer cuts the remaining deck. The top card of the bottom half is turned face-up as the "starter" card. If it is a Jack, the dealer immediately scores 2 points ("His Heels").

3

The Play (Pegging)

Players alternate playing cards face-up, announcing the running total. The goal is to reach exactly 15 or 31 for bonus points, or to play the last card under 31. Pairs, runs, and hitting 15 or 31 all score points during play.

4

The Show (Counting)

After all cards are played, each player counts their hand plus the starter card. The non-dealer counts first, then the dealer, then the dealer counts the crib. Points come from 15s, pairs, runs, flushes, and "His Nobs" (a Jack matching the starter suit).

5

Winning

The first player to reach 121 points wins. Points are tracked on the cribbage board — two pegs per player, leapfrogging each other to prevent miscounting.
